Textures and real world design reference work very well in some cases and others not. Skeuomorphic vs Flat is yet another stupid internet argument that will never be settled.
Of course designers abuse mwntia looking textures all the time. I took what was learned with iPhone and Dashboard, then David Lanham, here’s his website and I decided to make an icon set based around this principle: Using a Mac and OS X has been crucial to me working because I can stop worrying about the computer and focus on my work.
